Praeter. beyond the grape.

Praeter tells the story of wine made miles and years from home.

It is the soil, the rain, the blood and the tears.

It is the first bud to burst and the last bunch to harvest.

It is the bottle unforgotten.


Praeter. is my humble offering.

Who we are.

Praeter was started by Matt Large in 2018, initially born from a desire to explore and understand Nebbiolo in Australia’s soil and climate. Whilst working with Nebbiolo across both hemispheres, Matt was all the while continuing his career here in Australia working with some of the premier Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers in the country, most recently Shaw and Smith and Tolpuddle Vineyard.

In 2024, Matt decided to leave his role as Senior Winemaker at Shaw and Smith to return to farming grapes and focussing on Praeter full-time. It was at this moment and the following 2025 harvest that saw the first bottlings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir , and also the first fruit farmed and released under the Praeter label.

Praeter is now on a trajectory of working to farm better and better fruit, and celebrate unique and high quality sites across the regions that we work in. We are excited to be able make this commitment our life’s work, and share the wines that come from each lesson along the way.
